At the end of last week, Cheedale and Charlie were awaiting a fuel delivery, after which Charlie would take the works train to Darley to resume work on the tracks in and around the shed, leaving Cheedale to act as works shunter at Rowsley and Ashdown - well Ashdown is a bit more pernickety and only Rob and Harvey are authorised to use it.

With Andrew on a long weekend break at Butlins with his girl friend, you might be excused for assuming that I would be partaking of all the usual pre-Christmas jollities, like shouldering my fellow man out of the way at my local shopping centre, but you would be wrong. It was pretty much business as usual.

Ever since I went self-employed, if I am at home at lunch time, I seem to end up watching Bargain Hunt over my sandwiches. It has little relevance to this blog, save that it involves auctions, an environment that Mrs B is quite familiar with. Ever since Barclays bank screwed up my business back in 2001, we have watched a particular monthly auction in Sheffield, and over the years a surprising amount of tools and tackle have come our way from there, from swaging machines to sack trucks.

I have been doing a lot for Andrew this week. For starters having agreed to Plan B for the air cleaners on the ‘14, I started looking for a suitable modern rectangular air cleaner element. I identified 3 from my old Fleetguard catalogue, but a quick call showed that one was obsolete and the others had not been sold in the UK for years.

At the end of last week’s blog, I confidently forecast my popping in to Rowsley on Monday to photograph 14 901 hauling a decent-sized freight down to Darley. I should know better than to count chickens, or locos.

Andrew had the day off work on Wednesday and we travelled down to Bicester to view the latest batch of MoD rolling stock that Ramco has on tender. I have many memories of Bicester, from commissioning brand new Thomas Hill locomotives, conducting training courses in old carriages, testing a repowered Ruston and being happily unaware that the brake van at the back of our train was no longer on the rails… They weren’t always happy days, but I knew people there and the place always seemed a hive of activity.
