what we do for our kids

Of impeccable timing

5th May 2013

I usually say that on Bank Holiday weekends I will leave the blog until Monday, but then by the time Sunday night comes around I am convinced that to postpone it another 24 hours will only result in my forgetting what it was we were doing. So here we are again, and already it's 3 days on the trot and still one to go.

Of half-over pits and fan bits

28th April 2013

After tripping the radiator tubes in to that nice Mr Booth's yard on Tuesday, I went in to my usual hydraulics supplier to see about getting the fan motor from 14 901 repaired, but he was up to his neck in work and suggested a firm I have not used before. So off I went across Sheffield and left it with them, hopefully we should see it back early in May. Later in the week I spent some on the phone and internet talking to structural engineers regarding their costs for determining our requirements for concrete at the new shed and providing the calculations that Building Control will require.

Of best laid plans

14th April 2013

There have been various suggestions as to what to call this week's blog. "Of a rubbish/cr*p/(similar adjective) day" have been the most common proposals, but let me take you through in stages to the climax.

Of oils and cowls

7th April 2013

So on Bank Holiday Monday we sorted out a few things and as I was suffering from a bit of fatigue it was not until after lunch that we headed in to Rowsley with the intention of progressing Tom and 14 901. Andrew had decided to nip up the bolts on the Voith oil cooler which had been leaking for some time so we would need to see if it was better.

Of belts and bases

31st March 2013

I'm getting a bit confused this week. It wasn't just all this snow fall that has come down merely a week before Easter, but with our daughter and her fiance arriving Thursday night it has felt like the wrong day all weekend. Actually, on Wednesday, having to head that on business, I dropped in to Llanuwchllyn to pick up a 16mm model of mine that I haven't seen for a decade. The railway was getting ready to start the season, and 3 quarry tanks were in steam as the boiler inspector had been there earlier in the day for the annual physical.

Of hot and cold

24th March 2013

Andrew had the Monday off, in expectation that we would not have hired the vehicle the previous Monday and would do it then instead.. And anyway, after 500 miles the previous day going to see 14 901, he thought we could both do with an "easy" time. He can be so considerate. So we wandered in to Rowsley with the intention of getting "Libby" back into the shed.

Of a snowy, steamy Sunday

10th March 2013

After the exertions of last week, I am pleased that this week has been a little less demanding. Indeed, as Andrew was away with partner and their child for the weekend, Steph and I took the van up to our daughter's in Darlington on Saturday, taking up a wheelbarrow and a piano stool and returning with a vacuum cleaner and a wardrobe - not a bad swap really.

Of Charlie's big brother

3rd March 2013

I teased the readers with a hint of something happening this week and aside from those scurrilous souls who suggested that we were acquiring 08s or other such shoddy shunters I think we managed to keep most guessing. (Oh, and for those who don't know our views on 08s and their ilk, see "Of 08s and trawler engines, here - otherwise, read on).
