Of wheels and deals

19th March 2017

A visitor asked on Saturday 'How many of these locos actually work?' and for once I could say, that one, that one, that one, that one, and that , that and that could be made to go with batteries and an hour or two's work... It is not that we have made any dramatic moves forward on the collection, but suddenly you realise just how much we have achieved - so far.

Of returning heroes

12th March 2017

It's been a pleasant weekend here in delightful Derbyshire, the rain has stopped and today was positively spring-like.  I shouldn't put a jinx on it though. Probably by Friday we'll have storm 'Egbert' or some such with snow hail and hurricane winds. As my old geography master used to say 'Britain doesn't have a climate, only weather – discuss'.  Strange how if we then tried to discuss it between ourselves we were always told to be quiet.

Of looking on the bright side

24th July 2016

It's been a long hot week up here in Derbyshire (and the other places I've been to for that matter) and I especially enjoyed being sat on the M25 Tuesday evening after two cars and a foreign forty-footer closed it at Junction 25 when they all decided to occupy that bit of raod at the same instant. OK, not as bad as the poor souls stuck overnight in their cars trying to make it out of the country through Dover, but why is it that traffic always seems to increase, never matching the rise or fall of the economy?

Of visitors and crane beams

19th July 2015

It is appreciated, but certainly not obligatory, that the occasional visitor comes bearing gifts. What with Roger W arriving with fire extinguishers and such a  couple of weeks ago, this time our favourite ex RR service engineer, Neil W popped in during the week and presented me with a box full of R-R genuine oil filters and a few old lift pumps that seemingly had been cluttering up his loft. I was quite happy to show him around the progress – or lack of it – on the building at Darley Dale.
